Fringe theatre is a unique and rewarding experience, as enjoyable to watch as it is to take part in. You may have heard of other festivals in Edinburgh, Brighton and even Adelaide, they encourage creativity, make us think, make us cry and usually make us laugh too! And now, thanks to a partnership with the organisers, Durham University is proud to announce our very own event, as for the first time ever, a Fringe festival is coming to Durham!
During five days, twenty-seven companies are putting on one hundred and eleven performances in venues across Durham City. Expect magic, dance, stand-up, bands, cabaret, new music showcases, an aerial act – and of course, some cutting edge theatre!
From leafy gardens, to bars, clubs and cafes, Fringe is about performing anywhere there is space for a show and an audience. Durham Fringe runs from 28th July to 1st August at Fabio’s bar, The City Theatre, The Assembly Rooms and the gardens of St Chad’s College. There is guaranteed to be something for every taste, and after attending one performance, maybe you are curious enough to see something completely different? There are two shows looking at Sondheim’s legacy in the Music category, a brilliant play about the Durham Light Infantry can be found under Drama, and if stand-up is your thing, Aaron Simmonds’ Hot Wheels show is listed as a Comedy. The tickets are great value, most at £8 per show, and as it’s always more fun to go together, we recommend you make a day of it and bring along your family or friends. After lockdown it is time to finally let our hair down, safely within the Government guidelines, of course! We shall not require the use of face coverings or enforce social distancing in our venues; however, we would urge everyone to behave responsibly and think of the safety of themselves and others.
We hope you sample a range of the shows offered, and maybe something you’ve not tried before. Simply click on the show you fancy for more information or to book, then come back for another rummage. www.facebook.com/DurhamFringe
